houston. investigators there say it all began with some sort of disagreement between two people. one they decided to escalate with gunfire. both of them wound up with bullet wounds as did a maintenance man who investigators say got caught in the crossfire. students stay it was absolute pandemonium. >> just getting ready for calculus. i was studying in the library and just come from lunch. all the sudden i heard like bang bang bang bang. and a all of a sudden someone started screaming at the top of their lungs and i didn't know what to do. >> i was on the third floor in the library and we heard gunshots. everybody got up and we heard a guy on the floor. he was saying i'm shot, somebody help me. they told us to get down and we ran into a back office and they locked the door and we had to stay until the police came. >> shepard: they did. earlier on "studio b" i spoke with man who says his nephew was shot several times. >> this lady was standing up somewhere in the library. and a guy come by with a gun and shot him.

>> shepard: shot him repeatedly in the leg, the arm, and the stomach. all on his first day of school. we don't know his condition or whether he was involved in the initial argument. in any case, this is the fourth school shooting since last month's massacre at sandy hook elementary in connecticut. three of those four on college campuses. casey stegall live now at the lone star college campus and, casey, officials held a news conference a little while ago, yes? >> yeah, shepard. officials with the harris county sheriff's office who tell us that this all went down in between the library and an academic building right back here behind me. investigators and eyewitnesses say reports of up to 8 gunshots were heard. but authorities saying it's way too early to speculate what this argument was about that led to the gunfire. ironically, lone star college here had just rehearsed how to handle an active shooter. just within the last seven days on this campus, we have

had three training exercises for faculty and staff on what to do in an event like this. >> sign of the times. police say another person transported to the hospital this afternoon after reportedly suffering a heart attack during all of, this shepard. >> shepard: what a day for those students in the library, casey and beyond. >> yeah, absolutely terrifying. you know, this is a rather vast campus by the way. we want to show you live pictures coming in from kriv our fox affiliate in the houston area. about 18,000 students enrolled here, 65% of them are part-time. so hard telling how many were on campus today when these gunshots rang out. regardless, the whole place was on lockdown. nobody could leave. some people hid. others locked themselves away. >> when i walked out, everybody started running out. so there was like -- i had one more class to go i was like na, we better not go.

>> pretty much a lot of panicking, a lot of ruckus. everyone running. a lot of fear on campus. a lot of students tried running toward the bookstore. they told us to get away from the doors. it was like impromptu lockdown in certain buildings. >> yeah everybody was panicking. everybody was running and screaming and crying. >> officials say campus will reopen tomorrow, shep. >> shepard: casey stegall live in houston now investigators say a 15-year-old boy spent more than a week planning to kill his own family. early on saturday, he put that plan into action. the sheriff says he killed his parents, his brother and his two little sisters, all of itaps angry with his mother. >> the motive is articulated by the suspect, was purely that he was frustrated with his mother. he did not articulate that to our investigators any further or give any further explanation of that at all. >> shepard: investigators say

the suspect texted a photo of his mother's body to his girlfriend. and told detectives he thought about killing his girlfriend's parents, too. they say he also considered going to a wal-mart to shoot more people but for some reason he didn't follow through on that plan and, instead, turned himself in. a judge today ordered that teenager held without bond. fox weather alert. and man it's cold. and about to get colder. an artic blast slamming the eastern third of the nation with some the coldest weather in years. take a look at this. current temperatures across the country. it's in the 30's as far south as memphis and raleigh and well below freezing in new york and cleveland and about to get worse. and in cincinnati, snowy, icy conditions triggered this massive pileup which killed a 12-year-old girl. at least 86 cars and other vehicles got caught up in the crash that happened yesterday, according to investigators. one survivor said it all apparently began when a white suv right in front of him

started to skid. >> this car carrying a trailer, he pulled in front of me. a red car came up beside of me, he slipped in front of me. and then a semitrailer took out the box truck, the trailer. and then all hell broke loose behind us. >> shepard: it is so cold everywhere. right now in new york the feels like temperature zero. the national weather service reports that chicago has gone almost two years without subzero temperatures until today when the thermometer dropped to negative 1. but that is nothing compared to what folks are enduring in minnesota. temperatures near the northeast city of duluth plunged to a dangerous minus 33 this morning. and that's not a wind chill. ian leonard chief meteorologist with our station knsp in minneapolis. man, much colder than that with a feels like temperature, huh? >> yeah, the feels like temperature yesterday, shep, was 45 to 50 below. now, put that into perspective. we're talking frost bite on unprotected skin in less than

about 25 degrees. >> 25. wow, ian leonard fox 25. you enjoy that because we are freezing to death here in new york. one of the seven americans who survived the terrorist attack on a gas complex in algeria, quote: made it to hell and back. that's according to the colorado man's wife. in an interview with abc's good morning america as you probably know militants probably linked to al qaeda last week took dozens of hostage at that plant. a plant in the middle of the sahara. after four days the algerian military launched a counter attack with helicopters and special forces. some new video here of the aftermath. we can't verify the authenticity. 37 hostage confirmed dead along with 29 militants. as you can see, we have blurred out the images of the remains of human beings. one of the americans who survived told his wife he made it out alive by hiding in his office under a desk for days with almost nothing to eat or drink. >> he was there in hiding for

about two and a half days. was within two or three feet of some of the terrorists at times. some of his friends didn't make it there were a couple of times when he said he truly did think he was going to die. >> three other americans actually did, including texas native victor love lady. today, his family spoke for the first time to reporters about their heart-breaking ordeal. >> i just want to know how my brother died. it means a lot to me. they tell us they don't think he suffered. >> they did tell us? >> and we -- i want to know that because that's closure for me. >> he did the things that anybody would be proud of. words can't express the kind of man that he was to our family. >> five other former hostage are still missing tonight. and officials in algeria say they fear the men could be lost somewhere out in that vast did he vert. greg palkot is in our london newsroom tonight. greg, where are these seven survivors now and what more do

we know about their hostage drama? >> u.s. military officials tell us that they have sent aircraft to algeria and they have been brought out of that country. the wounded have been brought to a base, a u.s. base in italy. the rest have been brought to germany on their way back to the united states. one of those, that colorado native stephan wisoki he hid for days in that barracks. this white militants threatened the captives with explosives, searched for americans and performed, we're told, summary executions of hostages. the remains of those who died reportedly being brought to the dover air force base in delaware. here's a comment from the daughter of that texan, victor lovelady. take a listen. >> he made us feel like he was very safe and he felt safe. and that really bothers me now because he really, you know, he felt safe. i'm sure he was blindsided and had no idea. >> it is not believed that any

of those five hostage that are still remain unaccounted for, according to officials are americans, shep. >> shepard: do we know who the hostage takers are and what's being done to try to get them? >> well, the pentagon, shep, says that the number one suspect group is this terror group, the al qaeda in the islamic that gram. while 29 militants as you noted have been killed in the assault, the guy who was claiming responsibility for it is an al qaeda associate. his name is mac tar. it is believed he is hiding out in the neighboring african country of mali. that is where french troops right now are battling islamists. the u.s. is not sending combat troops there. it is helping out the french with transport and other manner nabbing the suspect of the killings involved in the killings and the terrorizing of americans that might be a good product of that contribution. shep. back to you.

florida reported receiving harassing emails. the later tracked those messages to general petraeus' biographer. during the course of the investigation they revealed that the biographer and general petraeus were having a love affair. that prompted general petraeus to resign as head of the cia. as for general allen, the pentagon's statement reads in part the defense secretary has complete confidence in the continued leadership of general allen, who is serving with distinction in afghanistan. showdown on capitol hill. secretary of state hillary clinton tomorrow expected to testify in front of lawmakers about last year's deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. the attack that happened on september 11th killed four americans including u.s. ambassador crist -- chris stephens. still unclear who led that result. months following them independent review cited systematic failures for the security and gedges breakdowns. secretary clinton was initially scheduled to testify about this attack last month. that got postponed while

at the bottom of the hour. live with us from the row rotuna on capitol hill. mike, house republicans meeting behind closed doors late today. have we heard anything? >> well, shep, some conservatives don't love this debt ceiling deal because they don't like the idea of adding to the nation's credit card. but all republicans are frustrated by the senate not passing budgets. so the message that house republicans are sending to their senate colleagues is if you don't do your job you should not get paid. >> right now, the biggest issue is the debt that's crushing the future for our kids and our grand kids. hard working taxpayers understand you can't keep spending money that you don't have. so we're going to continue to focus, especially here over this next 90, 120 day period on bringing some fiscal responsibility to washington. >> sources say late today in that meeting house speaker john boehner announced that house budget chairman paul ryan, the former vice presidential candidate is working on a plan to balance the budget in less than 10

years. that gives some reassurance to conservatives who are anxious about voting to authorize more debt, shep. >> shepard: democrats, mike, said they wanted a longer extension. what's the word from them on this proposal? >> well, the senate majority leader harry reid didn't fully embrace the house plan. he also didn't say no either. but over at the white house, well, they are saying the president would sign it. >> the bill still has to overcome some concerns expressed by members of the house and the senate before it can pass both chambers and reach the president's desk. if it does, and it reaches the president's desk, he would not stand in the way of the bill becoming law. >> if the president is not going to block it that would seem to add pressure on senator reid to take it up and act on it and that may force a budget to get done before long. shep? >> shepard: see what happens. mike emanuel on capitol hill. thanks. a good day for your 401 k. the dow and s&p 500 both closed at five year high. while the nasdaq went up 8 points. it's the seventh time the s&p

has closed at a five year high just this year. hopes that congress will raise that debt ceiling and some really better than expected earnings reports helped fuel the gains today. google beat analyst's expectations and that helped push its shares up about 5% in after hours trading. wow. chemical maker dupont and the insurer travelers also beat the analyst's estimates. 2012 was the best year for the housing market since before the financial crisis. that's the word today from industry experts. it's clear we are still not out of the woods. not yet anyway. the national association of realtors is reporting that americans bought more than 4.6 million existing homes last year. that's below the level of 5.5 million will that analysts consider healthy. but it's still up from 2011 and the highest since 2007. that same report shows that sales were actually down in december. but analysts point out that's partly because fewer homes were actually on the market then. in fact, the overall inventory has not been this low since

2005. gerri willis from the fox business network is with us. supply and demand. that usually means if you are trying to sell, good news. >> that's right. it's interesting because we have very high demand but low inventory. now you are getting multiple bids. remember multiple bids, we used to have a lot of those they are going back, prices going up to 87,800. bigging kahuna number. that may not sound like a lot to you in your market but it's up 12% from last year. that is a big move. >> huge number. looking forward two or three months, what do things look like? >> we still got head winds. a lot of people underwater in their mortgage. they owe more than the house is worth. locked into their mortgage. other folks are having trouble meeting the strict criteria that banks want to get loans. the fundamentals are slowly coming into place here. i like what i see. i think this is a good sign. >> shepard: great news. gerri willis, thanks so much. >> you are welcome. >> shepard: very important election. benjamin netanyahu today claimed victory in the

parliamentary elections. it appears his hard line party won a majority by only the narrowest of margins. what that means for the unreasonably frosty relationship for the united states and allies in the middle east remain to be seem. the race was tight enough that the opposing parties may have to form a coalition. in fact, they will have to. prime minister benjamin netanyahu is a noted hawk, especially on iran and a palestinian issues and now moderates could have much more say in the government. they have been pushing for peace talks with the palestinians. >> leland vittert is in tel aviv, what could this mean for the iranian threat? >> >> it could really change the dynamics behind me is prime minister netanyahu's campaign poster in hebrew it says a strong prime minister, a strong israel. the election results lead to you believe this will be anything because strong prime minister. as for a strong israel, the prime minister we saw on the stage tonight giving his

victory speech was much more dubbish, much more conciliatory, much softer than usual, very hawkish prime minister we normally see. we will see in the coming weeks here how he forms his coalition. meaning what kind of political promises does he have to make? does he promise to the hard core right that he won't make a deal with the palestinians? does he promise to the left he is going to offer tax cuts? that will give you a good idea where is he going to take policy both domestically and foreign policy although he has said iran is the number one issue that he has to deal with as he relates to security. as for united states been frosty lately between prime minister netanyahu and president obama. this could cut either way. either all of a sudden he could view himself as a weak prime minister. become more conciliatory. offer to go into peace talks with the palestinians as president obama has asked for. this could push him harder to the right, meaning he becomes more hard line and take as much stuffer stance against president obama in the coming months. shep? >> shepard: leland vittert as they dissemmable the campaign
